Dusty Dutton and family Topic:  A Parent’s View on Customized Employment with Dale Dutton
Dusty with John Butterworth

Dusty Dutton and John Butterworth presenting at the National Association of State Directors of Developmental Disabilities Services (NASDDDS) conference. View Large Image

Dusty Dutton is a 30 year old Californian with Down syndrome, diabetes, and limited vision. Her parents, Donna and Dale, have been very supportive of her inclusion as she has grown up, left the education system, and moved on to supported living and employment opportunities. Dale has focused his efforts on learning about the systems that will continue to facilitate Dusty's success as an adult. Donna has focused on planning and developing the direct supports Dusty needs day-to-day as she moves toward increasing independence.

Today, Dusty enjoys "having a life" and pursuing her dreams. In this online seminar, Dale talks about his daughter and her employment dreams and goals. If you have questions, please e-mail them to Dale Dutton.

7/2006 - Dusty's Puppets moves into public entertainment and retail sales at local Farmer's Markets

In her first experience Dusty was billed as an "entertainer". She was not supposed to be selling but could accept tips. In a little over two hours, Dusty took in $35 with much admiration, praise, and interest in future work (birthday parties, etc.). She also had the absolute delight of many wee tots (and their moms)!

Later in the week (Saturday), she was in the second venue as a "seller". This time the "take" was $75 for a three-hour gig! Sellers were asked to contribute 10% of their profits to the organization for space. Dusty gave them $10 and was booked on the spot to return every other week for the duration of the summer!
