As mentioned earlier, at some point you will have to negotiate a
work opportunity. To succeed, you must have a clear understanding
of the job seeker’s attributes and value that he or she can
bring to the company. You must see how the person can help the company
achieve results? Remember, job negotiation is not a list of the job
seekers wants or needs, but an opportunity to review the needs of
a business and show how the person can add value to the company.
To successfully negotiate, you must know the job seeker. You must
also have a very good understanding of the business operations and
specific work requirements. Without inside business knowledge, your
ability to negotiate a customized job that capitalizes on the strengths
of the individual and meets the business needs will be greatly diminished.
To get insight into the real business and its operations, you will
need to interview managers and workers, make observations, inventory
typical tasks performed by employees, and review job descriptions.
Hopefully, this should result in an employment proposal followed by
negotiations on behalf of the job seeker.
Negotiation is a process that involves compromise. You cannot expect
that a job seeker will simply receive a job offer as proposed. But
with the knowledge of the value that the person can bring to the company
and the company’s needs in mind, you can negotiate a position
that is agreeable to all parties.
