Suzanne Hutcheson, Tri County Tec

Transcript - slide 1

What have you found to be the biggest concern for parents?

  • safety
  • security
  • happiness

"Our challenge is for them to understand that employment is equally a safe place."

Interviewer: Today, we are very fortunate to have Suzanne Hutcheson with us. She is going to talk about working with parents within your organizations. Suzie, what have you found to be the biggest concern for parents?

Suzanne: Parents who have children with disabilities have the same issues that all of us as parents have. Their first concern is the safety, the security, and the happiness of their sons and daughters. When they begin to look at employment, it is terrifying for them. They have looked at sheltered workshops all these years as a safe place. Our challenge is for them to understand that [community-based] employment is equally a safe place. It is how we provide the supports, and how we are able to help them feel secure in the choices that they are assisting their sons and daughters make.
