Self Employment: People Who Own Themselves

Cary Griffin is Senior Partner at Griffin-Hammis Associates, a full service consultancy specializing in building communities of economic cooperation, creating high performance organizations, and focusing on disability and employment. Cary maintains a strong relationship with the Rural Institute at the University of Montana, where he served as Director of Adult Community Services & Supports. He is the former Executive Director of the Region VIII CRP-RCEP at the Center for Technical Assistance & Training (CTAT), which he founded at the University of Northern Colorado in 1989. Cary provides training to administrative and direct service level professionals in the rehabilitation field; consultation to businesses and rehabilitation agencies regarding the employment of individuals with significant disabilities; field-initiated research & demonstration; family & consumer case consultation; resource development; organizational development. Recently, Cary has been instrumental in designing self-employment protocols and training for individuals, schools, agencies, and states.


Target Audience: employment specialists, vocational rehabilitation counselors, community rehabilitation personnel, and others interested in community competitive employment for people with disabilities.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the workshop, participants will:

  1. Participants will understand Self Employment as one possible vocational option among many;
  2. Participants will learn a variety of collaborative funding and resource opportunities available to prospective business owners with disabilities;
  3. Participants will learn the advantages that self employment has over wage employment in the personal acquisition of wealth and equity;
  4. Participants will explore the role of community rehabilitation in self employment for individuals with a disability.

Overview of Session: Why would anyone prefer the risks of self employment to wage employment? Isn't self employment risky? Isn't self employment for young capitalists with unbounded energy, stamina, and intense business savvy? This session exposes the many myths of self employment for individuals with a disability. The session is practioner focused and uses numerous examples to demonstrate business feasibility, licensing structures, marketing approaches, financing opportunities, pricing, rehabilitation and natural supports, and how to go about getting started. A planning map is provided to assist participants in the critical thinking that any business start-up will need to be successful.
